FADE IN
EXT. AN ENDLESS DESERT. THE SUN IS SCORCHING AND THERE IS WHITE POWDER ALL OVER THE SAND. SOME INVISIBLE WOMAN WON’T STOP GOING AH AAAAH, AAAAAHHHH. TWO MYSTERIOUS STRANGERS STAND FACE TO FACE IN THE BLISTERING SILENCE.
MYSTERIOUS STRANGER 1
It’s really hot out, so I’ve decided to cover 98% of my body in black cloth.
MYSTERIOUS STRANGER 2
Me too. I also have a little snorkel for my nose which doesn’t do much but definitely looks cool.
MYSTERIOUS STRANGER 1
Who are you? I thought I was alone out here.
MYSTERIOUS STRANGER 2
I am no one. I’ve been through the desert on a horse with no name.
MYSTERIOUS STRANGER 1
Why doesn’t your horse have a name?
MYSTERIOUS STRANGER 2
In the desert you can’t remember your name.
NARRATOR
Stop it, both of you. You know what you’re doing.
MYSTERIOUS STRANGER 1
Since Gravedeath took power our people have been exiled to the desert and exploited for our, uh, resources. I’m looking for the boy who is prophesied to restore peace to the realm.
AUDIENCE
Lisan Al Gaib.
MYSTERIOUS STRANGER 2
There is no such person. Gravedeath will continue to use us for our, uh, white powder. There’s no hope.
MYSTERIOUS STRANGER 1
Quiet, this is worm territory.
MYSTERIOUS STRANGER 2
Shit, you’re right. Let’s start moving in an erratic and unpredictable way that will draw more attention to us.
MYSTERIOUS STRANGER 1
Too late, one is already on the way. A big one, too.
AUDIENCE
Shai Hulud.
MYSTERIOUS STRANGER 2
He’s right next to your foot. Wow, he is big! Almost the size of my finger.
MYSTERIOUS STRANGER 1
Absolutely disgusting.
MYSTERIOUS STRANGER 2
Yeah, worms are gross.
MYSTERIOUS STRANGER 1
Should we fight to the death now? That feels like the logical conclusion to this encounter.
MYSTERIOUS STRANGER 1
Probably, yeah. It’s only 120 degrees out so expending energy and losing water through sweat makes a ton of sense.
MYSTERIOUS STRANGER 2
Well, it was nice meeting you.
MYSTERIOUS STRANGER 1
You too. Shame to kill such a friendly guy.
MYSTERIOUS STRANGER 2
Not if I kill you first! Ha-ha.
MYSTERIOUS STRANGER 1
Ha-ha! Good one!
MYSTERIOUS STRANGER 2
Well, I’m ready when you are.
MYSTERIOUS STRANGER 1
I’m just grabbing my, uh, weapon.
MYSTERIOUS STRANGER 2
I have a grappling hook and half of a net. You?
MYSTERIOUS STRANGER 1
A shard of ceramic and a wooden spoon.
MYSTERIOUS STRANGER 2
Do we have to do this?
MYSTERIOUS STRANGER 1
The sun is pretty high in the sky. Maybe we should just call it a day?
MYSTERIOUS STRANGER 2
I don’t know about you, but I’m kind of tired out from walking on foot through the desert all day.
MYSTERIOUS STRANGER 1
I didn’t want to be the one to say it first.
MYSTERIOUS STRANGER 2
I have a month-old turnip that I might be able to squeeze some water out of for dinner. We can share if you want.
MYSTERIOUS STRANGER 1
That’s so generous of you. I have some of my own leftover piss from this morning. You’re welcome to share that with me too.
MYSTERIOUS STRANGER 2
Maybe I’ll just stick with the turnip.
MYSTERIOUS STRANGER 1
Your loss, more for me.
INVISIBLE WAILING WOMAN
AH AAHH, AAAAAHHHHH!
MYSTERIOUS STRANGER 1
What is that?! Why is it going all day?!
MYSTERIOUS STRANGER 2
Right?! I thought it was just me. So annoying.
MYSTERIOUS STRANGER 2
Man, this place blows.
MYSTERIOUS STRANGER 1
Yep. I’m so done.
